RM of Abernethy’s story
The Rural Municipality of Abernethy No. 186 was incorporated as a rural municipality on December 11, 1911. It lies along the Qu'Appelle River, which forms much of its southern boundary, and its office is in the village of Abernethy.
The RM surrounds the town of Balcarres and the village of Abernethy, along with the resort village of Katepwa. In 2004 the resort villages of Katepwa Beach, Katepwa South and Sandy Beach were dissolved and amalgamated into the Resort Village of the District of Katepwa. Within the RM are also the localities of Blackwood, Kenlis and Lorlie.
Katepwa Lake, one of the four Fishing Lakes in the Qu'Appelle Valley, lies along the southwest boundary. Visitors can find Katepwa Point Provincial Park there, as well as Motherwell Homestead, a National Historic Site of Canada.
